The Mystery Thing Revealed: Sea Anemone Jewelry

This is going to be fun...have you been following along with this past week's Guess The Mystery Thing challenge?  I'm about to reveal the truth behind the mysterious Sea Anemone jewelry!

For several days, my readers have been trying to identify the secret ingredient in these strange and bumply upcycled jewels.

Think you have an inkling?  Did anyone get it right?  Read on, my friend, read on.

Before the reveal, check out some of the funniest guesses ever in the history of this game.  Here is Mich's Honor Roll Of Most Creative (Totally Wrong) Guesses:

Shannon: A wig you had back in the 70's, which used to be day-glo orange and faded to light yellow.  Funky!
Lorraine:  A hedgehog's raincoat.
Meijo's JOY:  Lady Gaga's swimming cap.
Day: Bart Simpson's swimming cap.
Mixikim: The shed skin from a giant caterpillar who lives in (Alice in) Wonderland.
Anon: Godzilla's back hair extensions.
Keely:  An udder from Barbie's genetically engineered cow who produces only butterscotch flavored milk.
Ashley: You stole the macaroni and cheese from the school cafeteria! Years ago in a land far away, the school system (and the First Lady) decided that students should no longer have a favorite subject. And from that day on...no such thing as a delicious school lunch. High pitched scream, fog, lights go out.  Act two: I warn whoever wins, watch out. This Mac and Cheese will grow in the night, and when you wake in the morning...a huge disgusting blob will be at the end of your bed, forever leaving you *drumroll* LACTOSE INTOLERANT! DUN DUN DA!

I sprayed a gulp of butterscotch-flavored milk across the keyboard at that last one.  Ha!!!

All right.

Let's do this.

Ready?

Steady?

Pow!

A squeaky rubber hedgehog dog toy!  From the pet section of the dollar store.  Poor Mr. Hedgie.  He gave his pelt for a good cause.

Winners in a moment.  But first!  A quickie DIY on the practicalities of turning hedgehogs into jewelry.

For the pendant, trim to any shape that takes your fancy...

Squeaky toy rubber is pretty thin; just use a pushpin to make a few strategic holes for jump rings.

Then get creative about building a necklace around your new pendant.  Beads, chain and dangles, go to it!  Here's how mine looks from the back:

For the bracelet, I used ribbon ends - you simply clamp them onto the rubber, by squishing tight with a pair of pliers.  Then add beads and a clasp to make it come out to the desired length.

Winners winners whoohoo!  First prize for being correctamundo: Jenny C.  And my random.org winner: Hot Mess Housewife.  Congratulations, you two!  Expect my email shortly.

So.  Here's a question.

Are you the kind of kook who would wear a hedgehog face in public?

If so, you are my kind of kook.

Thanks for playing, everybody!  So.  Much.  Fun.

  10. Oooooh....! It is so weird! Love it! I am also not too fond of the face but I am absolutely in love with the structure!

...and I think you should try to print with the stuff! I think it could make great irregular dot patterns!

  11. Very cute! After seeing what it was originally, my first thought was "how cute the face would be as a focal for a necklace, bracelet, or key chain!" Already had a bunch of ideas to decorate it too. LOL. Kooky..??...or Kreative...lol..
