Today I thought I would do a little Show and Tell. Does this purse ring any bells?
It's the original straw handbag carried by Estelle Getty in The Golden Girls TV series. It's iconic, baby!
For a top secret project, a friend asked me to create a stage prop of Sophia's purse. Imagine a theatrical production of three original Golden Girls teleplays, with Dorothy, Blanche and Rose re-imagined as three young gay men sharing a house with outspoken house-mom Sophia.
I started with an Etsy purchase, the closest match I could find:
And here's what I did...
The beads are applied to the front of the purse, rather than integrated into the weave as in the original...but if you squint...? On stage, it was pretty fab. I'm thrilled to have crafted a tiny contribution to the only known staging of The Golden Guys.
Nice purse refashion!
